Simmons Bedding Company Joins the Specialty Sleep Association

Specialty Sleep Association Expands Membership With Top Bedding Manufacturer

May 4, 2009 - The non-profit Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) today announced that Simmons Bedding Company (“Simmons”), one of the nation’s top bedding manufacturers, has joined the organization, which helps educate consumers, retailers and manufacturers on “The Future of Sleep.”  Simmons, which manufactures both innerspring and specialty bedding products, is known for incorporating innovative technologies into its mattresses and is increasingly adding natural components to its bedding lines.

"The SSA is thrilled to welcome Simmons, one of the country’s top mattress manufacturers, to our organization,” said Dale Read, president.  “Simmons is taking an active role in the SSA’s Green Initiative Conference on May 8 as Anne Kozel, specialty sleep brand director, Simmons, will address the attendees as part of a manufacturer’s panel focusing on ‘Defining the ‘Green’ Issue --- What Direction are We Taking.’”

"We are very excited to join the Specialty Sleep Association and to help expand the awareness of the Specialty category,” said Scott Smalling, president of Simmons’ specialty products division.  “Simmons is committed to this category with our ComforPedic® and Natural Care® brands, and we intend to continue to expand our offerings to meet the ever changing needs of today’s educated customers."

The Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) Green Initiative conference takes place on May 8 at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point, Bonita Springs, Fla.  The SSA Green Initiative is a process designed to identify, define and standardize how mattress manufacturers and retailers label “green” and natural sleep products.  The ultimate goal will be to create a certification program based on existing, accepted standards and to define terms such as "green,” “natural,” “all-natural” and “organic." Registration for the conference can be found at: www.sleepinformation.org/contactnew/GREEN.html.

Atlanta-based Simmons Bedding Company (www.simmons.com) is one of the world's largest mattress manufacturers, manufacturing and marketing a broad range of products including the Beautyrest®, ComforPedic by Simmons™, Natural Care®, BeautySleep® and Beautyrest Black® brands. Simmons operates 19 conventional bedding manufacturing facilities and two juvenile bedding manufacturing facilities across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Simmons also serves as a key supplier of bedding to many of the world's leading hotel groups and resort properties. Simmons is dedicated to developing superior mattresses and promoting a higher quality sleep for consumers around the world.

Over the past several months, the SSA has succeeded in attracting other new members to its group, such as Sealy, Organic Mattress, Inc., TempurPedic, Leggett & Platt, Englander, Natura World, Hollandia, Lilly Management, Comfortaire, and Latex International, among others.

Founded in 1995, the Specialty Sleep Association (SSA) is a national not-for-profit organization created to facilitate the growth and positive awareness of the specialty sleep category. Its members develop and/or sell specialty sleep products, including air, flotation, latex, foam and adjustable sleep surfaces, and related merchandise. SSA membership is comprised of more than 100 manufacturers and retailers ranging from small, family-owned businesses to large corporations.

Companies interested in learning more about air, water, memory foam, latex, gel, adjustable beds and green or all natural sleep products should contact SSA Executive Director Tambra Jones, tambra@sleepinformation.org.
