Earth Day at SSA: Where Innovation Meets Intention

April 19, 2026

Each year on April 22, Earth Day serves as a global reminder of our shared responsibility to care for the planet. What began in 1970 as a grassroots environmental movement has grown into a worldwide celebration of progress, awareness, and action – bringing together individuals, communities, and industries committed to a more sustainable future.

In the sleep industry, sustainability shows up in powerful and practical ways. From the materials used in products to the processes behind manufacturing and distribution, many companies are rethinking how they do business – making intentional choices that reduce waste, conserve resources, and create healthier environments for both people and the planet.

At the Specialty Sleep Association, we are proud to highlight members who are putting sustainability into practice every day. Their efforts – whether through innovative materials, smarter design, or more responsible production – demonstrate that progress is not only possible, but already happening.

Sustainability in Action: SSA Members

Williams Co. Mattress

Handcrafted in Colorado, Williams Co. Mattress takes a holistic approach to sustainability. Using certified organic materials and primarily U.S.- sourced components, their mattresses are designed for longevity with replaceable layers and zippered constructions. This thoughtful design extends product life, reduces landfill waste, and supports a cleaner, more transparent manufacturing model.

W. Silver Products

W. Silver Products takes a unique approach by repurposing old rail steel from railroad tracks. This reclaimed material is milled into new components, including angle iron used in bed frames – giving new life to existing resources and reducing the need for new raw materials.

Purecare

PURECARE sustainable fibers

Purecare’s approach to sustainability begins with the materials that go into every product. From recycled PET- based polyester fibers to sustainably sourced TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fabrics, their wellness-focused bedding is designed with both comfort and environmental responsibility in mind. Their collaboration with Dr. Andrew Weil further emphasizes the use of natural materials, extending even into packaging with fabric bags, wooden tags, and biodegradable elements. Backed by certifications including Fairtrade, Better Cotton Initiative, Responsible Down Standard, and Global Recycle Standard, Purecare continues to reduce its environmental footprint through thoughtful sourcing and reduced plastic use.

Sleeptronic

Sleeptronic’s sustainability efforts are driven by a robust reclamation program that keeps materials out of landfills and in circulation. Wood, steel, plastic, and paper are all recovered and redirected into recycling and secondary markets. Their wood reclamation process returns usable materials back to suppliers or repurposes them into particleboard, while baling systems throughout their facility ensure that steel, plastics, and paper are efficiently recycled. It’s a comprehensive, operational approach to sustainability that maximizes resource use and minimizes waste.

Naturepedic

Naturepedic

Naturepedic’s commitment to sustainability is rooted in rigorous standards, thoughtful design, and responsible manufacturing. Their mattresses are certified to leading third-party benchmarks – including GOTS, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, and GREENGUARD Gold® – and are screened against thousands of potentially harmful substances while meeting strict low-emissions criteria. Through innovative design, Naturepedic eliminates the need for flame retardant chemicals, and its modular EOS Class Organic Mattress series allows customers to replace individual layers over time, extending product life and reducing landfill waste. Behind the scenes, the company continues to advance waste reduction efforts in its manufacturing processes, with products made in a GOTS-certified U.S. factory using organic cotton sourced from USDA-certified Texas farms.

My Green Mattress

With a focus on certified organic materials and in-house production, My Green Mattress minimizes environmental impact while maximizing product integrity. Their Illinois-based manufacturing reduces transportation emissions, while durable construction keeps products out of landfills longer. In celebration of Earth Day, they are also offering 15% off sitewide – making sustainable choices more accessible to consumers.

Latex Sleep

Latex Sleep

At the core of Latex Sleep’s sustainability efforts is natural latex – a renewable material harvested without harming rubber trees. Known for its durability, latex reduces the need for frequent replacement, minimizing waste. The company also repurposes excess materials into shredded latex fill for pillows, maximizing resource use and reducing production waste.

Mega Motion

Mega Motion integrates sustainability into comfort with its Mega Guard eco-friendly fabric. This water-based technology eliminates harmful substances such as VOCs, formaldehyde, and heavy metals – creating a cleaner product while addressing environmental concerns.

Jensen Beds

Jensen Beds

For more than 20 years, Jensen has demonstrated a deep commitment to sustainability, with products certified by the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. This recognition reflects their focus on eco-friendly materials, responsible production, and delivering a safe, non-toxic sleep experience – while contributing to a healthier planet.

First Direct

Sustainability isn’t limited to physical products. First Direct brings a data-driven approach to marketing, reducing waste by targeting the right audience with precision. By optimizing print runs, minimizing excess materials, and integrating digital strategies, they help retailers reduce environmental impact across the entire marketing lifecycle.

The Futon Shop

Celebrating 50 years this Earth Day, The Futon Shop and TFS Natural Home have long been champions of natural and organic living. Their commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted in their manufacturing, with a focus on crafting furniture, futons, and home goods that support healthier homes and a healthier planet. This milestone anniversary underscores a legacy of eco-conscious design and a continued dedication to sustainable living for future generations.

Healthguard

HealthGuard continues to evolve its sustainability practices through smarter packaging solutions. From recycled materials to space-saving rolled packaging that reduces shipping emissions, their initiatives demonstrate how incremental improvements can create meaningful environmental impact.

Cariloha bamboo towels

Cariloha

Cariloha’s mission – “A Comfy Way to Save the Planet™” – is rooted in the power of bamboo, one of the world’s most renewable resources. As a Certified B Corporation, the company integrates sustainability into every product, delivering fabrics that are soft, breathable, and environmentally responsible while supporting a more circular lifestyle.

Beaudoin: Sustainability, by Design

Beaudoin

Beaudoin approaches sustainability through durability and thoughtful engineering. By creating long-lasting products with fewer, more efficient components, and assembling key elements in-house, they reduce material waste, transportation, and overall environmental impact.
For Beaudoin, sustainability isn’t an add-on – it’s built into every design decision

From materials to manufacturing to marketing, sustainability is shaping the future of sleep—and it’s on full display in the SSA community.
